LEGO® MINDSTORMS® EV3
The LEGO® MINDSTORMS® EV3 is a robotic construction toy that children 10 years and up can use to create and program their own robot. A central component of the product is the child-friendly visual programming language children can use to add interesting behaviors to their creations and make them do what they want.
dknl design consulted the development team at the beginning of the design process to improve the existing visual drag-and-drop programming language for the latest generation of LEGO MINDSTORMS. The main objectives were to make the language suitable for younger users and improve program readability. This task involved designing new visual programming blocks (the building blocks for creating programs) that were simpler to understand and use, without compromising the advanced functionality needed to program robots. Printouts of example programs were evaluated with children in the target group. The resulting design proposals served as the foundation for the further development of the visual programming language by the development team.
The LEGO MINDSTORMS EV3 set was met with great enthusiasm when it was announced at CES 2013 in Las Vegas. The product won several awards and received positive reviews on tech blogs such as WIRED, Ars Technica, SlashGear and PCMag.
