Danfoss living eco® EV3

The Danfoss living eco® is an innovative programmable radiator thermostat that fits onto any existing radiator. Using an intuitive interface, it is suited for the domestic market and enables homeowners to have significant energy savings with the push of a few buttons.

dknl design consulted to design a powerful and user-friendly interface for the Danfoss living eco, which packs many useful features into a modern, compact design. The challenge was to design an intuitive user interface for a product with a very small screen and only three buttons. Our approach was to develop a very flexible prototype of the interface running on a touch-based device, which allowed for many usability tests and various iterations in a short timeframe. The prototype was flexible to the point that it was possible to make changes during collaborative prototyping workshops – used to gather input from key stakeholders from Product Development, R&D, Marketing, Usability Consultants, and even end-users.

Several custom tools were developed by dknl design that enabled the development team to make further adjustments to the prototype and for various forms of communication and documentation. A tool to export high-resolution screenshots was extensively used to develop the specification used by developers, as well as for creating images for the user manual.

The Danfoss living eco received a red dot award for product design in the bathrooms, spa and air-conditioning category.
